The history of Hoddesdon Charter Fair and Market

Tuesday 18th April 10am

We recently installed a Commemorative Plaque for the Hoddesdon Charter Market and Fair to mark this charter awarded in 1253. You can find this plaque on the rear wall of the Hoddesdon Clock Tower.

So, what is the history of the charter fair?

In January of 1253 King Henry III granted Richard de Boxe, a local land owner, to hold a weekly market and three-day annual fair in Hoddesdon.

The market continues to trade every Wednesday as well as Friday, whilst celebration of the Charter Fair was reintroduced onto the High Street in 2010

Students of St Catherine’s School explain more…

Thank you to Sue Garside, Local Historian, for her insights in the history of the Charter fair and marketing. A thank you to John Forest for his production of the video. And we thank the students of St Catherine’s for helping us deliver the story of the charter fair and market.
